Help with Managing Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the many speed bumps along the road of life's journey. These "anxiety speed bumps" appear in many different ways and can cause us to lose momentum in what we are doing. Anxiety, although it is annoying, can also help us to slow down and gain proper perspective.
Anxiety speed bumps may present themselves as fear of the unknown, worry about what might happen or nervousness about our past. It can affect our future in other ways too. The danger is that it can give us an unhealthy perspective about reality, steal our joy, and distract us from what's important. It can even interfere with serving and loving God. Often, anxiety brings doubt and fear which are not gifts from God!
Anxiety arises when life presents situations and people that cannot be controlled, manipulated or fixed. Anxiety is a result of coming to terms with the fact that we are not in control. We panic over that instead of resting in the ONE who IS in control, God.
Unlike God, we are not omnipresent (Proverbs 15:3). We are not omniscient (Isaiah 40:28) which means to know it all. We are not omnipotent (Job 42:2) which means we can do anything we want without restraint, or immutable (Malachi 3:6) which means to be unchanging. Actually, we are completely fallible so we MUST KNOW we can't do it all, be in charge of it all, or change it all.
And though we know this, we really don't like it. It might be a trust issue. Martha Tennison, a popular women's author says, "We don't trust who we don't know. If you don't trust God, it may be that you don't know Him."
Perhaps for you, it's an issue of letting your feelings and emotions take control. But remember, only God is unchanging. Emotions and feelings change like the wind. If we were to act on all our feelings immediately as they happen, without first gaining proper perspective, imagine the mess that you could create. Perhaps you've experienced it! ...which then, only ADDS to your anxiety!
Only God is unchanging even in the midst of His great feelings and love for us! He can be counted on to have complete control in a situation. God sent His son, Jesus, to walk the earth and know what it's like to walk in our shoes. He experienced "anxiety speed bumps," but no matter what kind of anxiety He faced, He looked up and prayed, "not my will be done but yours."
Jesus was obedient and self sacrificial to God's will and He KNEW peace. Jesus even tells us that he leaves us His peace and that we should not fear (John 14:27). You CAN be set free from anxiety. Just follow Jesus' example, obey God and deny your will for His. Give up your control, so He can take it. And he will! (Philippians 4:6)
Pray with me:
God, I'm not saved by my excellence and abilities but by Yours. I know you sent Your son, King Jesus, to earth to live as I do and I know he knows what it means to be uncertain and fearful. I also know that in spite of it, He did Your will even to the point of death on a cross He endured for my sins. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for taking control of my life so that I don't have to worry anymore. I give it ALL to you...my life and my anxieties. Help me to have the right perspective...a perspective that concentrates on your TRUTH and love. In Jesus' name, Amen.
